Vegetarian/veganism in Germany especially is unreal!!

To celebrate the birth of Positive Example Records, Björn's d. i. y. record company, he set up a show with Stay Hungry, Risk it, Currahee and Echoes in Leipzig. Unfortenately Echos couldn't make it, but the show was still a blast. Lot's of fingerpointing and dirty dancing. Currahee from Manchester stayed at ours and we talked for a while. A great bunch of guys with some sincere love for Youth Crew Hardcore. After they played a mattinee show in Münster Michael answered some questions.

UtopiaNow: After your Stop in Leipzig you played Münster. How was the matinee show over there?

Michael XCurraheeX: We love to play shows, and like any other shows we enjoyed this one. A couple of people were singing along which is always great but most importantly we played well as new line up.

UtopiaNow: Michael, you toald me, that after that last tourdate you had to work really early: You work as a driver: Did you make it on time without killing someone... haha?

Michael XCurraheeX: I arrived home 2 hours late for work and therefore had to 3 minutes in my house to get ready... Fortunatley for me i dont have to do my hair haha. As for killing anyone... My lawyer advises me to say no comment :p

UtopiaNow: Refering to to your band's name and the design of your singles: In Contrast to the quite military look of your singles you guys are not preparing for a straight edge jihad or am i wrong? So what's up with that „hardcore militia“ stuff... hehe. I think all of you guys are big fans of the hbo serial band of brothers? Am I right?

Michael XCurraheeX: Haha a good question that surprisingly does not get asked too much. Well, Currahee does refer the first episode of the tv show Band Of Brothers and in this episode they use the term 'Currahee' as a band of brothers getting through a hard time together. Also quoted as 'We Stand Alone'. Like our second record.

UtopiaNow: Michael, you toald me that there is just a small straight edge and D.i.Y -scene in Manchester and the general interest of the hardcore kids is now mainly focused on beatdown stuff. Did the local
scene change in regard of their musical taste and attitude or have the older guys left and the new kids on the block just have a different taste and style of doing things?

Michael XCurraheeX: Yes it seems the straight edge side of the scene have all grown up and moved on to settle for family life. The kids today have all had their spell of being 'straight edge' but now they either dont come to shows or now drink. This really sucks as it has made a huge dent in the scene. It does seem like the heavier side of hardcore has taken over as the majorities favourite but we still care for it we carry on doing our thing.

UtopiaNow: How did you get into positive hardcore / youth crew hc and hardcore/ punk in general?

Michael XCurraheeX: Well in high school i was in to punk rock. I was one of about three or four kids who didnt listen to R&B like what was the 'in' thing at this time. But soon after leaving school and meeting more people and older people in college i got introduced to Gorilla Biscuits, Youth Of Today, Uniform Choice and Warzone. Obviously by buying these records you read about the bands they recommend inside and then that opened up a never closing window. By buying these records you hear about Bold, Judge, Chain etc and no matter how many other genres i listen to i just dont get the same buzz as i do from youth crew and hardcore in general.

UtopiaNow: Whe talked about the differences of hardcore in Germany and the UK. To sum it up: What do you think are the main differences according to politcal aspects, vegetarianism/ veganism and doing shows?

Michael XCurraheeX: This answer will be short and sweet. I dont do politics! Living in the UK you will realise haha. Vegetarian/veganism in Germany especially is unreal!! You guys really give a shit about the World and really take action on your beliefs. In the UK vegetarian is big but we dont relate it too much to punk rock/hardcore and we definately dont take action in a serious way. All i say is that we all do our bit in a small way and that is by taking vegetarianism seriously and hopefully these small steps become giant leaps. Hardcore in general is different in Europe as people just love the music. The UK has a huge chip on its shoulder.

UtopiaNow: After the two singles, can we expect a whole album coming soon?

Michael XCurraheeX: Definatley. This is the next project. We will also be putting out a discography soon called Prohibition X at some point but a full album is next.

UtopiaNow: What records do you listen to when you are on the road as a band?

Michael XCurraheeX: Haha this will shock!! Well as a driver for a living i like fast music. Reach The Sky, Grey Area, Ambitions, Kid Dynamite and Faded Grey are my favourites but i cant speak for everyone as Mike (drums) has a few guilty pleasures including Paramore and Taylor Swift!! I know!! Haha

Michael XCurraheeX: Please tell the readers why you call our dog Max – although his name is Clyde - and he didn't respond at all?:)

Michael XCurraheeX: Haha well when i was growing up my dad had this huge German Shepard called Max. My uncle had a Pitbull terrier called Max. And later in life i learnt that my name was given to me in a coin toss and Max was the alternative. So, Max seems to be the name of the beast... And Clyde looked like he could well be the beast!! haha i just think if i had a dog again i would have to name him Max as ot seems to be the name to roll off my tongue. SICKEM Clyde also works haha

Michael XCurraheeX: It was great to get to know you guys. Take care!
